Then we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan. Og king of Bashan came out with all his army to meet us in battle at Edrei.
The LORD said to me, 'Do not be afraid of him. I have handed him over to you, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.'
So the LORD our God also handed over to us Og king of Bashan and his whole army. We struck him down until no survivor was left.
At that time we captured all his cities — sixty in all — the entire region of Argob, Og's kingdom in Bashan.
All of these were fortified cities with high walls, gates, and bars, along with a great many unwalled villages.
We completely destroyed them, as we had done with Sihon king of Heshbon, putting every city under the ban — men, women, and children.
But all the livestock and the plunder from their cities we kept for ourselves.
So at that time we took from these two Amorite kings east of the Jordan the land from the Arnon Valley to Mount Hermon.
(Hermon is called Sirion by the Sidonians and Senir by the Amorites.)
We took all the towns of the plateau, all of Gilead, and all of Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei — towns that belonged to Og's kingdom in Bashan.
(Og king of Bashan was the last of the Rephaites. His bed was made of iron and was about fourteen feet long and six feet wide. It is still in Rabbah of the Ammonites.)
Of the land we took possession of at that time, I gave the Reubenites and Gadites the territory north of Aroer by the Arnon Valley and half the hill country of Gilead, along with its cities.
The rest of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. The entire region of Argob in Bashan used to be known as the land of the Rephaites.
Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of Geshur and Maakah and named it after himself — Havvoth Jair. That is the name it still carries today.
And I gave Gilead to Makir.
To the Reubenites and Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead down to the Arnon Valley — the middle of the valley being the border — and as far as the Jabbok River, which is the border with the Ammonites.
On the west, the Arabah and the Jordan River formed the border, from Kinnereth down to the Sea of the Arabah — the Dead Sea — below the slopes of Pisgah.
At that time I commanded you: 'The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your fighting men must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites, armed for battle.
But your wives, your children, and your large herds — I know you have many livestock — may stay in the towns I have given you,
until the LORD gives rest to your fellow Israelites as he has to you, and they too have taken possession of the land the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan. After that, each of you may return to the possession I have given you.'
At that time I commanded Joshua: 'You have seen with your own eyes everything the LORD your God has done to these two kings. He will do the same to all the kingdoms on the other side of the Jordan.
Do not be afraid of them. The LORD your God himself will fight for you.'
At that time I pleaded with the LORD:
'Sovereign LORD, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your strong hand. What god in heaven or on earth can do the works and mighty acts that you do?
Please let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan — that fine hill country and Lebanon.'
But the LORD was angry with me because of you and would not listen. 'That is enough,' the LORD said. 'Do not speak to me anymore about this matter.
Go up to the top of Pisgah and look west, north, south, and east. Look at the land with your own eyes, because you will not cross this Jordan.
But commission Joshua and encourage and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across and will cause them to inherit the land you will see.'
So we stayed in the valley near Beth-peor.
