Jesus entered the synagogue again, and a man with a withered hand was there.
Some were watching closely to see if he would heal the man on the Sabbath, so they could accuse him.
Jesus said to the man with the withered hand, "Stand up in front of everyone."
Then he asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent.
He looked around at them in anger, deeply distressed by their stubborn hearts, and said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.
The Pharisees went out and immediately began plotting with the Herodians against him, discussing how they might kill him.
Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a large crowd from Galilee followed him.
People also came from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and from the region beyond the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon, because they heard about everything he was doing.
Because of the crowd, he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him so the people would not press in on him.
He had healed many, so all who had diseases were pushing forward to touch him.
Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, "You are the Son of God."
But he gave them strict orders not to reveal who he was.
Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.
He appointed twelve, naming them apostles, that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach,
and to have authority to drive out demons.
These are the twelve he appointed: Simon, to whom he gave the name Peter;
James son of Zebedee and his brother John, to whom he gave the name Boanerges, which means "sons of thunder";
Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot,
and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. Then Jesus went home.
Again a crowd gathered, so that Jesus and his disciples were not even able to eat.
When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, saying, "He has lost his mind."
The scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he drives out demons."
So Jesus called them over and spoke to them in parables: "How can Satan drive out Satan?"
"If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand."
"And if a household is divided against itself, that household cannot stand."
"And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come."
"In fact, no one can enter a strong man's house to steal his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can plunder his house."
"Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter,"
"but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Ghost will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin."
He said this because they were saying, "He has an unclean spirit."
Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him.
A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, "Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you."
"Who are my mother and my brothers?" he asked.
Looking at those seated around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers!"
"Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother."
