Follow the histories of the Nephites, Lamanites, Jaredites, Mulekites, and Anti-Nephi-Lehies from their origins to their ultimate fates. Explore key leaders, major events, and how these five distinct peoples intersected and shaped Book of Mormon history over more than 2,600 years.
The Book of Mormon is not just the story of one people, but the intertwined histories of at least five distinct lineages, each with their own origins, key leaders, major conflicts, spiritual awakenings, and ultimate fates. Understanding these lineages and how they relate to each other is essential to comprehending the full narrative arc of the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon Lineage Tracker organizes these complex histories into a single, visual interface that shows how these peoples split from one another, merged together, warred against each other, and witnessed God's work across millennia.
The five major lineages are: the Nephites (who separated from Laman and Lemuel and strove to follow Nephi's righteous example), the Lamanites (the descendants of Laman and Lemuel who became the dominant people), the Jaredites (a pre-Nephite civilization that crossed the ocean at the Tower of Babel and left their records on gold plates), the Mulekites or People of Zarahemla (who fled Jerusalem before Lehi's family and later merged with the Nephites), and the Anti-Nephi-Lehies or People of Ammon (converted Lamanites who became some of the most righteous people in the Book of Mormon). Each lineage had different origins, experiences, spiritual leaders, and outcomes.
The Book of Mormon Lineage Tracker provides a comprehensive timeline spanning from roughly 2200 BC (the Tower of Babel and the Jaredites) through 420 AD (the final records of Moroni). This timeline captures 20+ major events including the separation of Nephi from Laman and Lemuel, the discovery of the Mulekites by King Mosiah, the great missionary journeys of Ammon and his brothers that converted thousands of Lamanites, the wars of Captain Moroni, the birth and ministry of Jesus Christ to the Nephites, and the final destruction of the Nephites at Cumorah. Each event is color-coded by lineage and categorized by type: split, merger, conflict, migration, or spiritual event.
For serious Book of Mormon students, understanding these lineages is crucial. Too many readers finish the Book of Mormon without grasping why the Lamanites were marked with a skin of blackness, how the Jaredites' destruction relates to later Nephite history, why King Mosiah's discovery of the Mulekites was so significant, how the Anti-Nephi-Lehies and their famous two thousand stripling warriors fit into the bigger picture, or why the Nephites were ultimately destroyed while the Lamanites survived. The Book of Mormon Lineage Tracker illuminates all of these questions, providing the historical and genealogical framework you need to understand the full scope of the Book of Mormon.

The Nephites were the descendants of Nephi, who separated from his older brothers Laman and Lemuel around 588 BC. Nephi obtained the brass plates (records of his ancestors) and led his followers to the promised land. The Nephites strove to follow the teachings of Nephi and kept written records of their history. They were ultimately destroyed by the Lamanites around 385 AD at the hill Cumorah.
Captain Moroni was a brilliant military strategist and devout believer who led the Nephite armies during a period of intense Lamanite invasion around 72 BC. His most famous act was raising the Title of Liberty -- a standard inscribed with the name of Jesus Christ -- to rally the Nephites to defend their faith, families, and freedom. This event symbolizes the Nephite commitment to religious and political freedom.
The Anti-Nephi-Lehies were a group of converted Lamanites, led by King Lamoni and King Anti-Nephi-Lehi, who were baptized through the preaching of Ammon and his brothers around 90 BC. They covenanted never to take up weapons of war again. Despite being massacred by unconverted Lamanites, many survived and merged with the Nephites. Their descendants -- the people of Ammon -- produced the famous two thousand stripling warriors, all of whom survived their battles despite receiving many wounds.
The Jaredites were a pre-Nephite civilization led by Jared and his brother (the Brother of Jared) from the Tower of Babel around 2200 BC. The Brother of Jared saw the finger of the Lord and received the most sacred visions in all scripture. The Jaredites built a great civilization but eventually fell into wickedness, secret combinations, and civil war. Their nation was completely destroyed around 550 BC. The last survivor, King Coriantumr, was found by the Mulekites.
The Mulekites, descendants of Mulek (son of King Zedekiah of Judah), fled Jerusalem around 586 BC and eventually settled in the land of Zarahemla. They had no written records and had dwindled in unbelief. Around 130 BC, King Mosiah of the Nephites discovered them and united the two peoples. The Mulekites' records were added to the Nephite records, and Zarahemla became the capital city of the unified Nephite nation.
